Abstract

Description
"This book is meant to be an anthropological introduction to Japan for those who have only a modest amount of background either in anthropology or Japanese culture. It is not, in short, intended as a work for specialists on Japan. The content of this book consists largely of digests and summaries of the findings of a large number of scholars, although the writer's own views cannot help being expressed in the selection of topics and the organization of materials. In addition, I have tried in places to present my own interpretations of Japanese culture, which are different from those previously expressed by others. I hope they will be an aid in a better understanding of Japan"--From Introduction.
