"As a contribution to the observance of the 20th anniversary of Okinawa's return to Japan, the Executive Committee for this exhibition has undertaken to bring 180 Ryukyuan cultural objects of historical importance, carefully selected from more than 3,000 pieces at 50 museums and libraries in four European countries and the United States, as a special exhibition, 'Ryukyuan Art Treasures from European and American Collections.' The items on display include valuable documents and other historical materials which shed light on contacts between the Ryukyuan Kingdom and the European countries from the early 16th century to the end of the 19th century. They also include masterpieces of Ryukyuan art like lacquerware, ceramics, pottery and weaving and dyeing materials. All of these have returned to Okinawa for the first time"--From Foreword.
