This book contains a selection of 46 essays which appeared between 1989 and 1996 in the Ryukyu Shimpo newspaper's English page, "The Shimpo Weekly News." The 25 contributors--all foreigners and native speakers of English--share their impressions and opinions on a broad spectrum of topics, the element common to all of them being Okinawa. Thus we have Okinawa as perceived through the senses, as well as historical, artistic, comparative and anecdotal vignettes, all in some form instances of cross-cultural experience, which in the very nature of things entails a meeting--occasionally a clashing--of worlds.
